Interview tips

When going for an interview this is a chance for the employer to meet you. What most people do not realise is that an interview is a way to market yourself.

Look the part

The very minimum of clothes should be a shirt, trousers and shoes, try to look smart and make an effort. This could depend on the kind of work you will be doing, if you will be working on a construction site then you may not need a suit and tie, Wear the minimum just to show that you have made the effort. When contacted about an interview the best thing to do could be to ask them what would be suitable.

Be punctual

It is usually helpful to find out where the interview is have a trip down there, turn up ten minutes early so that you have time to settle and prepare yourself.

Prepare for the interview

Have a look on the internet and have a look at who you are applying to, the kind of work they do and how you can fit in. Repeat what you have put on your cover letter about values and beliefs. Try to build a connection with the interviewer so that they remember you over others.

If you have a portfolio of all of your relevant certificates then take them with you, the employer may not need or want them but its better if you did have them in case they do.

What to do first

Once you are in the interview room shake hands with the interviewer and introduce yourself. Once this has been done make sure you are looking smart this would include taking any jacket/coats off.  Once you have introduced your self and been asked to sit down you will be asked questions. When the interview has started make sure you listen to every question and answer confidently.

Smile and be friendly

Be polite and talk in a friendly manner, do not go over the top and be too friendly this may put them off.

Ask questions

Have some questions that you want to ask to show that you are interested in the position and the company. If you had questions prepared but they were all answered in the interview then say so. "I did have some questions, but you have already answered them."

Say thank you for them taking the time to see you and that you hope to hear from you soon.
